While there is no magic switch to instantly spark creative thinking, there are practical ways to shift your mindset and challenge yourself to think outside the box.

As professional communicators, copywriters and graphic designers we’re constantly having to think creatively to deliver new and engaging content and ideas for our diverse pool of clients. Staying “in the zone” can be challenging, so we’ve tried and tested a few techniques to keep inspiration flowing every day.

As there is no one size fits all method to creative thinking; we’ve compiled six techniques you can try to activate the right side of your brain (the creative powerhouse) and unleash your potential.

Always be on the look out

Creativity doesn’t operate on a schedule, so train yourself to notice inspiration everywhere. Build a bank of creative ideas by constantly looking for inspiration. You will be surprised if you take the time to stop, look and listen how much you can learn from your surroundings. Inspiration can strike when you least expect it!

Let new experiences fuel new thinking

Ideas are the sum of your knowledge and experiences so it’s important to push yourself to try new things, especially outside of your comfort zone. Challenging your personal norm will open the opportunity for you to see things from a different perspective and put you in a ‘free space’ and encourage innovative thinking.

Take a breath

When tasked with developing a new idea or working on a new project, take the time you need to let the brief sink in. This will allow your subconscious to think freely without the constraint of time or expectation to deliver immediately. Write down ideas as they come to you so when you’re ready to tackle the task, you’ve already got a starting point.

Try divergent thinking

Divergent thinking involves brainstorming many possible answers to a question or creative solutions to a single problem and then narrowing down the possibilities. Key to divergent thinking is being open during the process – there are no good or bad ideas.

Think in analogies

Analogies are a powerful tool to help you understand complex or unfamiliar concepts by relating them to something you already know. This can help you unlock new possibilities or perspectives by helping you identify opportunities, develop ideas, test assumptions and implement solutions.

Understand the market you operate in

It doesn’t hurt to look at what other organisations are doing and have done to help you identify gaps where you could potentially lean in to. Watching your competitors can help you define your difference which will allow you to own your unique space in the market. You certainly don’t want to be doing the same as other organisations, but it is good to keep your pulse on what’s happening out there and challenge yourself to be different.

Creative thinking is a skill that can bring greater innovation and problem-solving solutions, empowering you to adapt, differentiate, and thrive in competitive markets.
