Live events like conferences, exhibitions and corporate functions are powerful opportunities to connect with your audience in real time. But the benefits don’t have to stop at the venue doors. With the right digital strategy, you can amplify your reach, share your brand story far beyond the room, and create a content stream that builds momentum for months to come.

So, how do you take your in-person event and extend it to a digital audience – not just during the event, but before and long after?

Start with a plan

Before your event begins, think about how digital content can be integrated into your event planning. Consider how the content you create on the day will support future event promotion, increase brand visibility, and offer value to those who couldn’t attend in person.

Create a shortlist of social media handles for speakers, sponsors and key stakeholders ahead of time. This allows you to tag relevant people and organisations quickly during the event. For LinkedIn, collect both personal profiles and company pages. On Facebook and Instagram (Meta), make sure you’re tagging business accounts rather than personal ones.

It’s also worth developing a branded hashtag. While hashtags don’t work as well for discovery on Instagram these days, they’re still useful for tracking and engagement on LinkedIn and Facebook. Encourage attendees to use the hashtag and have your MC or host mention it during opening remarks.

Create early excitement

Warm up your audience before the main event kicks off. Posting behind-the-scenes content – like photos of lanyards, the set-up, or signage going into place – is a great way to build anticipation.

Once guests begin arriving, short videos or phone snaps of people entering the venue, or close-ups of branded installations and exhibition stands, help set the tone. These are great opportunities to thank sponsors with real photos instead of standard logo tiles – authentic, in-the-moment content performs better across social channels.

Go live and keep it dynamic

Once sessions begin, use real-time social media updates to reach audiences beyond the room. Share quotes, key takeaways and speaker photos during or shortly after each session.

Transcription tools like Otter.ai can help you summarise key insights quickly and pair them with visuals to create powerful LinkedIn or Facebook posts. Be sure to tag speakers – it brings them into the conversation and encourages resharing.

At the same time, keep an eye on your hashtag and attendee posts. Like, comment and re-share audience content to build community and momentum.

Maximise breaks and downtime

Between sessions, take the opportunity to profile sponsors and exhibitors. Candid photos of their teams at their stands, along with a simple thank you and tag, can go a long way in delivering added value.

Breaks are also a great time to capture attendee reactions. Short vox pop videos, Instagram Stories, or Reels of people networking or reflecting on their favourite session can give your digital presence an energy boost.

If you have a photographer onsite, consider uploading a photo album to Facebook at the end of each day and encouraging attendees to tag themselves. It’s a simple, effective way to extend the life of your event online.

Wrap it up with a strong digital finish

Your digital strategy doesn’t end when the event does. All your content – posts, photos, quotes and videos – can now be repurposed into a compelling post-event wrap-up.

A clever post-event strategy is to copy all your social content into ChatGPT and ask it to generate a summary article. Shape this into a blog or content piece for your website, including the best visuals, speaker quotes and sponsor links. Optimise the content for SEO and promote it via your newsletter and social media to keep the event alive in people’s minds.

You can also publish long-form articles directly from your company’s LinkedIn page. A “Top 10 Takeaways” article is a great way to reach new followers and re-engage your network. Don’t forget to tag those featured or involved – it’s another layer of recognition and exposure.

Build the bridge to your next event

Capture testimonials while the energy is fresh – short quotes or quick videos from attendees and sponsors will be invaluable when promoting your next event.

Most importantly, don’t let your amazing content go to waste. Use it to create teaser campaigns and FOMO-driven posts that show potential attendees what they missed – and why they should come next time.

Reuse, recycle, reignite

A live event is no longer a one-day engagement. With the right digital strategy in place, it becomes a long-lasting brand experience that builds awareness, grows your community, and sets the stage for future success. Whether it’s live posting, video content, attendee engagement, or post-event storytelling, every piece of digital content is a chance to make your event go further.
