Family businesses aren’t just a part of Australia’s economy – they are the economy.

Representing 70% of all businesses and employing half the workforce, their contribution is vast. But beyond the numbers, the real value of a family business lies in something less tangible – its story, its values, and the deep trust it builds with customers over generations.

To celebrate 2026 Family Business Conference in Hobart, we thought we’d deep dive into the world of communicating family businesses.

The 2025 Family Business Barometer published by the Family Business Association shows just how distinct this sector is. Family enterprises excel because they think long-term, put people first, and stay true to their purpose, even in tough times. In fact, 70% of consumers say they trust family businesses more than non-family counterparts – a trust built on legacy, integrity, and connection.

The challenge for family businesses? Making sure customers, stakeholders, and community see and feel this difference. That’s where clear, consistent communication comes in.

When communicating the extra value that family businesses bring to the table, here are the top six things we add to the strategic plan.

1. Tell Your Legacy Story

One of your biggest advantages of family business, is the long-term vision that underpins every decision. Use it. Share the founder’s vision, the milestones you’ve reached, and how you plan to build for future generations. Campaigns built on legacy and long-term thinking remind customers that you’re not here for the quick win – you’re here for the long haul.

2. Show Your Values in Action

The Barometer found that 73% of family businesses credit strong family values as their top success factor. These values aren’t just words – they guide how you treat your team, your customers, and your community. By communicating these values consistently, you create an authentic brand identity that attracts loyalty.

3. Be Nimble – and Tell People About It

One of the strengths of a family business is agility – the ability to make quick decisions without layers of bureaucracy. When you adapt to customer needs or market changes, make it part of your story. Customers and staff want to know that a family business isn’t hindered by tradition, rather inspired by the future.

4. Put the Customer at the Centre

Customer loyalty is the lifeblood of any business – 56% of family businesses say it’s a key to their success. Show customers they’re valued and that their relationship with you matters as much as their transactions. Testimonials, show-casing long-term partnerships and revealing the relationships are all key elements of this story telling.

5. Engage with Your Community

Your deep roots in the community are a huge competitive advantage. They give your brand warmth and credibility that money can’t buy. They also raise your awareness, fuel your word of mouth, and keep competitors at bay.

6. Share Your Expertise Across Generations

Family businesses are powerhouses of intergenerational knowledge. This is a goldmine for positioning yourself as a thought leader in your industry. Especially now as many organisations grapple with having 5 generations in the workforce, your ability to manage this well, is a key driver of success.

The Takeaway

The numbers in the latest Family Business Barometer speak for themselves – strong values, loyal customers, and dedicated teams are what set family businesses apart. But unless you actively communicate these strengths, they risk being your best-kept secret.

By telling your story, showing your values, and celebrating your connection to customers and community, you don’t just sell products or services – you sell trust, heritage, and a promise for the future. And that’s a message worth sharing loudly and often.
