There’s a lot of noise right now about how AI is transforming communications from rewriting copy to replacing journalists, taking over SEO and quite possibly your job!
Courtesy of Coverage to Capital, a new report on AI and reputation reveals that while AI is reshaping the information ecosystem, traditional PR fundamentals such as earned media, reputation stewardship and authoritative content, are all more powerful than ever. This is because AI is reading the news.
We’ve always championed substance over spin. And it turns out that substance, delivered via quality editorial, structured digital content and credible media relationships, is exactly what AI trusts too.
So, what did the robots reveal?
Hard Numbers, the agency behind the report, analysed how large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT form brand impressions. The topline insight? Traditional media still dominates AI-generated content. In fact, 61% of responses were based on editorial sources, especially when it came to traits like trust (65%) and value (72%).
In other words, if your organisation is mentioned favourably in respected news outlets, AI notices. It listens. It learns. And then it repeats what it sees – often without much scepticism.
Owned content (your website, blogs, press releases) also scored high, especially when talking about innovation (66%) and quality (55%). AI likes it when your owned content is well-optimised, so if you’ve not updated your website or managed your SEO now’s the time to prioritise it.
It is important to remember that while AI is clever, it’s not critical. It won’t challenge your narrative, fact-check your claims, or call out greenwashing. If anything, it has a tendency to repeat your story back to you – which makes it all the more important that the right story is the one it’s learning from.
What does this mean for managing your communications?
Here’s the twist: the rise of AI reinforces the need for a strong communications strategy in action. Reputation management, media strategies and authoritative content creation have always been our focus, but where we once wrote website copy for humans and the google bots, we now write for humans and AI.
What should your comms strategy include today?
- LLMs lean heavily on AI when forming impressions, and so do your stakeholders. Continue to build strong, earned media coverage in trusted outlets.
- Optimise your owned content so it’s not only well-written but technically structured for visibility – clear headings, metadata, internal links, and all the nerdy bits Google and ChatGPT now love.
- Start treating LLMs like the new stakeholders they are. Think of them as slightly odd but influential editors who regurgitate what they read. Make sure what they read about you is accurate, authoritative, and favourable.
- Monitor how AI models are referencing your brand and correct misinformation if it creeps in (which, let’s be honest, it occasionally will).
The future of search is summarised
As search behaviour shifts from clicking through to reading AI-generated summaries, the job of PR isn’t just to secure column inches, it’s to make sure those stories shape the digital summaries people now rely on. Your reputation, in many cases, will be compressed into a neat paragraph generated by a machine. We can help make sure it’s the right paragraph.
It’s no longer just about who’s listening.
It’s about what they’re training the robots to say.
And we’re here to help you make it count.
